Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has reiterated his government’s full support for the planned electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, describing it as a strategic priority for both nations.
Speaking to huffingtonpost.gr, Christodoulides said, “Of course the cable will be built, and of course we are working in that direction. It is the wish of the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek government — and I say this based on my discussions with the Greek Prime Minister.”
He clarified that his recent public remarks were prompted by actions that deviated from the mutual understanding reached with the Greek leader during meetings in New York and Copenhagen.
“There is no crisis,” Christodoulides stressed, adding that relations between Athens and Nicosia — and personally with the Greek Prime Minister — are “stronger than ever.”
He acknowledged the existence of some technical differences regarding the project, but emphasized that these are matters for independent authorities to resolve. “This is a project of strategic importance, which the Republic of Cyprus supports and wants to see implemented,” he said.
