President Nikos Christodoulides said this week that the government had been able to increase social spending thanks to the country’s positive economic performance.

He made the remarks during a meeting at the Presidential Palace with representatives of the Cyprus Confederation of Disabled People, the Cyprus Federation of Patients’ Associations and the Third Age Observatory.

Christodoulides told the groups that the government viewed them as partners in efforts to improve daily life for vulnerable citizens.

He said recent and planned measures were the result of ongoing consultation with the organizations and reflected their priorities.

He said the government had increased social expenditure in 2024 and 2025 and had budgeted a further 6 percent rise for 2026, noting that the fiscal space to do so came from continued economic growth.

He added that the state had a duty to respond to the needs of citizens and invited the organizations to outline additional steps they believed were necessary.
