Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has said that the government is acting with a “clear plan and direction” on issues related to the British Sovereign Base Areas but will not comment publicly so as not to affect ongoing efforts.

Christodoulides said there is a specific policy approach in place and noted that previous negotiations on non‑military development within the Bases had received a positive response from London.

Asked about the timing of any new discussions, he said the government’s immediate priority is managing the current crisis. He added that Cyprus’ positions have already been formally conveyed to the British government and that preliminary talks have taken place.

The president stressed that more than 10,000 Cypriot citizens live within the Bases and “are not second‑class,” adding that the government has an obligation to ensure their safety.

He also said Turkish Cypriots could have a role in any future negotiation on the issue — but only if they return to the Republic of Cyprus, and if Turkey first recognizes the Republic.
