Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has said that more companies have expressed interest in securing new exploration areas in the country’s exclusive economic zone.

He said the government’s energy program is moving ahead under international law and remains in full progress with operators already active in Cyprus’ offshore fields.

Cyprus’ broader energy plans include continued appraisal and development work in licensed blocks, expansion of natural gas infrastructure and coordination with international partners on future export options. Officials say the strategy is meant to bolster energy security and support long‑term regional cooperation.

Asked whether remarks by Turkey’s energy minister — who spoke of conducting research activities around Cyprus — were a response to his own recent comments about natural gas agreements, Christodoulides said he did not know what prompted the statements.

Christodoulides said Cyprus is acting in line with international law and continues to work with Chevron, Eni and Total.

In related developments, Brent crude briefly rose above $120 a barrel on Wednesday after reports that the United States is preparing for an extended blockade of Iran, its highest level since 2022.
