Cyprus President, Turkish Cypriot Leader Set February 24 Meeting Under UN Auspices

The President of Cyprus is scheduled to meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman on Tuesday, February 24 at 11 a.m., according to a written statement from government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

The meeting, which will take place under the auspices of the United Nations, was arranged following consultations through the Greek Cypriot negotiator. It marks the latest effort to maintain open lines of communication between the two sides and to advance the stalled peace process.

Letymbiotis said the encounter is part of a broader initiative aimed at restarting substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue, picking up from where talks last broke off.

The island has been divided since 1974, and repeated rounds of UN-mediated talks have failed to produce a lasting settlement.
