FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Thursday chaired the first meeting of a newly formed committee tasked with negotiating the maritime border between Lebanon and Cyprus.
The meeting was attended by Public Works and Transport Minister Fayez Rasamny, who leads the committee.
Officials discussed the guiding principles for future negotiations aimed at defining the boundaries of the countries’ Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in the eastern Mediterranean.
The talks mark a strategic step for Lebanon as it seeks to clarify its maritime borders and unlock potential offshore energy resources.
Cyprus has already signed EEZ agreements with several neighboring states, and Lebanon’s move signals its intent to formalize its own maritime claims.
Earlier this year, Cyprus’ Ambassador to Lebanon, Maria Hadjitheodosiou, emphasized the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
At the time, Aoun thanked Cyprus for its support within the European Union on Lebanon’s behalf and praised the strong bilateral ties.
He noted that Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides’ visit to Lebanon in January underscored the depth of the relationship and expressed his intention to visit Cyprus soon as a gesture of mutual respect and continued collaboration.
