FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Sovereign Base Areas Police arrested 23 people ahead of Easter following six multi-agency operations around Pyla village.
The arrests were for traffic violations, possession of class-B drugs, offensive weapons, and smuggled tobacco from the Turkish-controlled areas.
The operations were conducted in cooperation with the United Nations, Cyprus Police, and customs and immigration officers from both the Sovereign Base Areas and the Republic of Cyprus.
Authorities have ramped up efforts to deter the illegal distribution of fireworks, a recurring issue during Easter celebrations.
Although last year’s crackdown was successful, officials say homemade pipe bombs remain a concern, particularly among young people.
Despite enforcement efforts across Cyprus, officials say young people continue to set off homemade explosives in the streets.
