Decisions on expanding the number of civil defense shelters in Cyprus are expected at the next Cabinet meeting.

President Nikos Christodoulides said the government is not satisfied with the current level of preparedness.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said a proposal will be submitted calling for an increase in shelters, which currently cover only about 40–45 percent of the population.

The plan would also require every new apartment building to include an underground Civil Defense shelter equipped with basic facilities such as a toilet and drinking water.

As an incentive, developers would be granted an additional 5 percent building coefficient, up to 50 square meters.
