Cyprus’s tourism sector is showing signs of recovery, with the negative impact of March’s drone incident at the Akrotiri base now largely contained, according to figures released by the Statistical Service.
The decline in tourist arrivals in July was limited to just 1.1 per cent, with 582,754 arrivals recorded compared with 589,116 in the same month last year.
For the period January to July, however, Cyprus received 204,640 fewer visitors than in the corresponding period last year, a fall of 8 per cent.
The United Kingdom remains the largest source of tourists to the island, followed by Israel, with the two countries together accounting for more than half of all arrivals.
In a written statement, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Costas Koumis, said the arrivals figures confirmed the resilience that characterised the tourism sector and reflected the true picture of a destination that, he said, remained undeniably full of life.
