FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Water Development Department (WDD) has ramped up efforts since Saturday to fully restore water supply to all communities affected by recent wildfires, officials said Sunday.
A central water supply is now functioning in every impacted area, while crews continue repairs to damaged drillings, springs and pumping stations.
WDD personnel are also assisting communities facing internal water network disruptions, responding swiftly to reports from local authorities.
The wildfire, which broke out midday Wednesday in the hills north of Limassol, scorched more than 120 square kilometers, destroyed homes, and triggered evacuations in at least 14 villages.
Two fatalities have been reported, along with multiple injuries.
Extreme heat, prolonged drought, and strong winds fueled the spread, overwhelming firefighting crews despite international aerial support. Infrastructure suffered widespread damage, with hundreds of utility poles lost and water reserves critically low.
