A new Eurobarometer survey on defence indicates heightened concern among Europeans about national security and growing expectations for a stronger EU role in defence and security policy.
According to the findings, 52% of Europeans say they trust the EU to strengthen Europe’s security and defence.
In Cyprus, trust is significantly higher at 73%, one of the highest levels recorded among member states.
The survey, conducted 5–12 January 2026, confirms that defence and security remain top priorities for EU citizens, and that Europe’s space policy is increasingly viewed as linked to security. Cyprus stands out both for its high trust in the EU and for its elevated perception of security threats.
Across the EU, 68% of respondents believe their country’s security is threatened in the current international environment — 27% “totally agree” and 41% “tend to agree.” In Cyprus, the figure rises to 76%, with 23% fully agreeing and 53% partially agreeing.
Personal safety concerns are also higher in Cyprus. EU‑wide, 42% of respondents feel their personal security is at risk to some degree, compared with 52% in Cyprus.
