FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The fire service attended 90 incidents in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning, with many linked to Easter bonfires.
Of the 51 fire-related cases, 32 occurred in Larnaca, where young people lit fires in various locations. Crews responded to incidents in Larnaca town, Kiti, Tersefanou, Aradippou, Pyla, and Kornos, ensuring safety during the festivities. SBA fire services were also attending to a bonfire lit opposite the EAC power station near Dhekelia which was ignited and fully ablaze at 17:30.
“The Larnaca district was intensely active, especially in the early hours, with incidents of young people creating lambradjies,” Spokesman Andreas Kettis said.
Tragedy struck later in the day, as a 22-year-old man died in Nicosia, after being fatally injured while helping construct a bonfire.
Over the last few weeks, authorities had increased patrols and inspections for fireworks and firecrackers.
Crisis Centers operated in all provinces throughout the Easter holidays to coordinate responses to incidents.
Police also conducted coordinated inspections of all organized lambratzies, which have been planned in collaboration with ecclesiastical and municipal authorities.
