Former Cypriot President George Vassiliou has died at the age 94.
Vassiliou, who led the Republic of Cyprus from 1988 to 1993, had been hospitalized since Jan. 6 with a severe chest infection.
Born in Famagusta in 1931, he worked as an economist and entrepreneur before entering politics.
His presidency was marked by steady economic growth, low unemployment and renewed efforts to advance talks on the Cyprus issue.
After leaving office, Vassiliou remained active in public life and later served as Cyprus’ chief negotiator for the country’s accession to the European Union.
