Police in Cyprus have arrested a 44-year-old former footballer in connection with the killing of businessman and football official Stavros Demosthenous, who was shot dead Friday morning in Limassol.

Authorities said the suspect was detained late Saturday under a warrant issued as part of the ongoing investigation.

He is believed to be the registered owner of a high-powered scooter discovered earlier that day in a car park in the Agios Tychonas area. Police suspect the vehicle was used by the assailants to flee the scene after setting fire to a white van believed to have been used in the murder.

Investigators confirmed the existence of video footage showing the suspects escaping the scene of the arson. The footage is expected to play a key role in the case.

Demosthenous, a well-known figure in local business and football circles, was gunned down in what police have described as a targeted attack. Authorities have not yet disclosed a motive.

The investigation is ongoing.
