FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – A prolonged heatwave continued to grip Cyprus on Sunday, sending thousands of residents to coastal areas and mountain retreats in search of relief.
With temperatures soaring to 43 degrees Celsius inland, beaches filled early in the day. The beach at Dhekelia saw the first bathers arrive just after 5.30am.
Many sought shade and cooler air in the mountains, while the capital remained quiet, resembling a deserted city.
Coastal towns and resorts in Paphos, Geroskipou, Akamas, and Polis Chrysochous saw heavy turnout, with families, couples, and older residents gathering near the sea.
The heatwave is expected to continue through Wednesday, with no significant change in temperature.
Authorities have issued warnings urging the public to avoid sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take precautions against heat-related illness.
Beaches in Limassol and Larnaca were also packed, with children playing in the sand and adventurous swimmers taking part in water sports.
