ISTANBUL — Prosecutors are continuing a corruption investigation involving suspended Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and several others, who face charges including leading a criminal organization, bribery, fraud, and unlawful access to personal data.
The probe also includes Şahan, the former mayor of Şişli, previously jailed for allegedly aiding a terrorist group. He was remanded on new charges of extortion and membership in a criminal organization.
Authorities say witness statements and evidence suggest Şahan carried out multiple extortion schemes and funneled proceeds to the alleged network. He remains in custody.
The investigation is part of a broader inquiry into alleged misconduct within the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.
