Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday the country’s fight against Hamas is not over, even as the release of hostages held in Gaza draws near.
Speaking in a televised address, Netanyahu called the expected release “a historic event that some people never believed would happen”.
Crowds gathered Sunday at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, awaiting news of the captives. Israeli officials say 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with 26 confirmed dead and 20 still alive.
Police and emergency services were on site to assist families and maintain order as the nation braces for the next phase of negotiations.
