FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The Government of Ireland has donated €25,000 to the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), bringing its total contributions to €500,000 since 2006, officials said Wednesday.

The funds will support the CMP’s ongoing efforts to locate, identify and return the remains of individuals who went missing during intercommunal violence and conflict, helping to provide closure to affected families.

Established in 1981 under United Nations auspices, the CMP operates as a bi-communal initiative between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.

Its exhumation and identification project became fully operational in 2006, with the European Union serving as its primary donor.

To date, the remains of 1,055 missing persons have been identified and returned for burial.

The CMP continues to rely on international donor support to carry out its mission.
