The acting mayor of Paphos met with fishermen in Kato Paphos to discuss long‑standing problems they say have remained unresolved for decades.

In a written statement, Angelos Onisiforou said the top issue is extending the Paphos harbor entrance.

He said plans, funding and technical expertise are already in place, but political will to advance the project is still lacking.

He said authorities have long cited antiquities on the seabed at the proposed site as the reason for delays and questioned why no steps have been taken to address the issue. He said bureaucratic obstacles cannot continue to block a project discussed for decades.

Onisiforou said fishing vessels and other boats in the harbor need proper protection. He said fishermen should not have to stay awake during winter storms to safeguard their property because the state has failed to complete the project.

He also called for measures to protect the Paphos Medieval Castle, saying it is a key landmark and warning that future restoration costs will be far higher if action is not taken now.

Onisiforou said the fishermen’s demands are reasonable and necessary, adding that it is frustrating the same issues have been raised for years without results. He urged all relevant authorities to coordinate and agree on final solutions.
