Dozens of mobile phones, narcotics and other prohibited items were seized over the past four months at Cyprus’ Central Prisons as authorities intensified inspections inside the facility and at visitor entry points, the Justice Ministry has said.
The ministry said the stepped‑up checks, in full operation since Jan. 1, aim to ensure the smooth and secure functioning of the prison system.
It also reminded the public that, following amendments to the Prisons Law passed in February, bringing in, possessing, using or attempting to bring in mobile phones or other banned items now constitutes a criminal offense.
