FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Demonstrations in Famagusta, northern Cyprus, turned violent on Sunday as students clashed with police during protests supporting Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
The students shouted anti-Erdogan slogans, leading to confrontations with security forces.
Meanwhile, across Turkey, thousands protested Imamoglu’s arrest on corruption charges.
The mayor, a prominent rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was set to be nominated as the Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) 2028 presidential candidate.
His detention sparked the worst unrest in over a decade, with police using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds.
