Authorities may keep residents of Akrotiri away from their homes for several more days as a precaution while conditions in the area continue to stabilize, the head of Cyprus’ Civil Defense said Tuesday.

Civil Defense commander Maria Papa told state radio that 80 of the community’s roughly 1,100 residents — including young children and people with mobility issues — were housed overnight in hotels. Another 50 stayed in schools prepared by Civil Defense, while several others were accommodated in a monastery.

Most residents spent the night with relatives, Papa said, while about 30 chose to remain in their homes despite the advisory.

Officials are exploring additional organized facilities that could host displaced residents if needed, she added.

Papa said authorities would first speak with those who stayed in schools to determine whether they wish to move elsewhere, followed by residents currently staying with family members.

Police from the British Bases are continuing frequent patrols to safeguard homes and property in the affected area.
