Russian energy giant Gazprom will halt gas exports to Moldova from January 1.
The country is preparing for widespread power outages.
Gazprom cites unpaid debts as the reason for the shutdown. According to Russian calculations, Moldova owes $709 million for previous deliveries.
Moldova claims the debt is $8.6 million.
