Cyprus’s schools are ready for the return of pupils, the president of the Pancyprian Federation of School Boards, Nikos Megalemos, said on CybC.
He acknowledged, however, that some matters would inevitably remain unresolved, as building works were still under way at a number of schools.
Mr Megalemos described prefabricated classrooms as a necessary evil, given that certain school buildings were in need of upgrading. He conceded that some prefabricated units had effectively become permanent fixtures, adding that ultimately everything came down to budget.
On the subject of air conditioning, he said installation plans were progressing, though not at the pace school boards would like. He attributed the delay to difficulties with electrical wiring works and a shortage of qualified electricians.
Mr Megalemos noted that air conditioning had now been installed in 85 per cent of kindergartens, while the figure stood at between 50 and 60 per cent in primary schools, gymnasiums and lyceums.
Asked about the possibility of installing lockers in schools to reduce the weight of pupils’ bags, he again said the matter depended on budget. He noted that lockers had already been fitted in some lyceums, and suggested that priority should now be given to primary schools.
