Researchers at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics have reported findings that could improve treatment of some of the most aggressive and drug‑resistant cancers, according to studies published in a peer‑reviewed journal.

The team focused on tumours such as pancreatic and breast cancers, sarcomas and melanomas — cancers known for dense, rigid tissue and distorted blood vessels that prevent chemotherapy from penetrating the tumour.

According to the institute, researchers used an approved antihistamine to soften the tumour’s structure and improve blood flow.

They then applied therapeutic ultrasound to increase vessel permeability, alongside standard chemotherapy.

The combined approach weakened the tumour’s outer barrier, reduced tissue stiffness and allowed drugs to reach the cancer more effectively, resulting in a marked reduction in tumour size.

The institute said the findings open new possibilities for treating cancers that traditionally respond poorly to existing therapies.
