FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Rescue teams in Crete are intensifying efforts to locate Mikel Pelek, a 65-year-old Israeli woman who has been missing since Wednesday.
Despite extensive searches by ground rescue teams and aerial support, no trace of Pelek has been found.
Greek TV reports the operation involves members of Greece’s 3rd EMAK rescue unit, Red Cross personnel familiar with the terrain, firefighters, police, coast guard officers, and volunteers from Israel and the local community.
On Monday, a helicopter hired by Pelek’s family conducted an aerial search, but no results were reported.
Witnesses say Pelek was wearing hiking gear and had set out on foot toward a rugged coastal route she was reportedly familiar with.
Her mobile phone reportedly stopped functioning on Thursday.
Israel’s consul in Greece visited the search area Monday, and operations are expected to continue Tuesday.
