The race to elect a new Metropolitan of Paphos is shifting rapidly, with new candidates emerging and others withdrawing as the nomination period continues.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, Archimandrite Grigorios Ioannidis, the protosyncellus of the Trimithous diocese, has expressed interest in the post. Archimandrite Sofronios of the Trooditissa Monastery and Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis have also reportedly submitted their candidacies.

Local church circles in Paphos are also discussing the possible candidacy of Ioannis, abbot of the Stavropegic Monastery of Apostle Barnabas. They say his entry into the race would carry significant weight due to his pastoral and administrative experience.

Bishop Christoforos of Karpasia and Bishop Grigorios of Mesaoria are said to have withdrawn from consideration.

The Holy Synod is expected to meet Tuesday, May 26, to approve the final list of candidates. If no procedural issues arise, an immediate election of the new Metropolitan of Paphos remains possible.
