Tokyo shares dropped Thursday as technology stocks slumped amid worries over massive artificial intelligence investment in the United States.
The Nikkei 225 fell 510.78 points, or 1.03%, to close at 49,001.50. The broader Topix index lost 12.50 points, or 0.37%, to 3,356.89.
Declines were led by nonferrous metal, electric appliance and machinery shares. The Nikkei briefly plunged more than 800 points after the tech‑heavy Nasdaq slid overnight on reports that Oracle Corp. would not receive funding from Blue Owl Capital for a planned $10 billion data center project.
Oracle said the project remains on schedule, but analysts warned the news has stoked fears of an AI bubble and excessive investment in data centers.
