All those who have been arbitrarily imprisoned in Venezuela since the disputed elections last July must be released, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has demanded.
“The Secretary-General strongly condemns the arrest of a large number of individuals, including opposition politicians, journalists and human rights defenders, since the presidential elections on 28 July,” said Guterres’ spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.
The UN chief’s statement came on the same day that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was sworn in as president for the third time.
Last year’s election was controversial and has sparked protests and international criticism. The opposition believes it won the election.
