FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The door remains open for a settlement to the Cyprus problem, but time is running out, said Colin Stewart, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, during a lecture in Nicosia.

Stewart emphasized that the process will be gradual due to the breakdown of trust between the involved parties.

He acknowledged that the Turkish Cypriot side’s opposition to reunification has complicated efforts.

Regarding the appointment of a UN envoy, Stewart stated that an announcement would be made soon but did not confirm details.

He welcomed the appointment of members to the Technical Committee for Youth and expressed optimism about progress in three other confidence-building measures: cemetery maintenance, demining, and environmental initiatives.

However, he noted that discussions on new crossing points and a photovoltaic park in the buffer zone remain challenging.

If progress is made, it could provide momentum for the next expanded meeting in July.
