Men in Cyprus earn an average monthly salary of 2,776 euros, compared with 2,378 euros for women, according to a front-page report by the newspaper Haravgi.
The gap amounts to a difference of 398 euros per month, or 4,776 euros per year, between men’s and women’s pay.
Haravgi also reported that 37.4% of women earn less than 1,500 euros a month, compared with 31.1% of men.
Among those earning more than 6,000 euros a month, women made up 3.8%, while men accounted for 7.2%, the newspaper said.
The report noted that Yiorgos Koukoumas, an AKEL lawmaker who chairs the Cypriot House of Representatives’ Labour Committee, has raised the issue and is pressing for the immediate implementation in Cyprus of a European directive on pay transparency.
