Cyprus’ Department of Electromechanical Services is calling on property owners to replace outdated main protective switches still found in some electrical installations built before 1990, warning that the old voltage‑type devices no longer meet modern safety standards.

The ministry said the upgrade to a newer current‑type switch is a simple, low‑cost measure that significantly improves electrical safety.

The device costs about €60, not including installation, and the work must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor.

The Electricity Authority of Cyprus and the department will provide free inspections and oversight through Dec. 31, 2026.

The final deadline for compliance is Oct. 1, 2026. After that date, the EAC may disconnect power to properties that have not completed the upgrade.

A €60 subsidy is available for vulnerable consumers under EAC tariff 08, covering the cost of the new device. Applications, using form HMY 73.26, must be submitted by Sept. 30, 2026.
