Cyprus swelters as mercury hits 44°C, triggering fresh heatwave alert

Cyprus remains firmly in the grip of a punishing heatwave, with temperatures forecast to reach 44C inland today – a new high for the year so far.

The Meteorological Service has issued a fresh orange warning for extreme maximum temperatures, in force between noon and 5pm.

All relevant authorities have been placed on heightened alert as the sweltering conditions continue, with officials urging particular caution among vulnerable groups, who have been advised to take steps to protect themselves from the heat.

The Civil Defence has issued guidance to the public on safeguarding against the exceptionally high temperatures, while an order has also been enacted suspending outdoor activity during the hours the orange warning remains in effect.
