Cyprus makes debut national appearance at Hamburg’s SMM maritime trade fair

Nine Cypriot firms showcase shipping technology and innovation as government pushes to raise island’s maritime profile abroad

Cyprus staged its first-ever official national pavilion at SMM Hamburg, one of the world’s leading maritime technology trade fairs, in a joint initiative by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry and the Cyprus Trade Centre in Berlin.

The fair, held in Hamburg from 1 to 4 September, drew more than 50,000 visitors from 134 countries and around 2,300 exhibitors from 66 countries this year. Cyprus’s national pavilion brought together the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) centre of excellence, and nine Cypriot companies, showcasing services and technology spanning maritime connectivity, marine IPTV and data centres, artificial intelligence and automation, technical and electromechanical services, ship repair and maintenance, navigation and satellite communications, classification and verification, and compliance and software development.

The ministry said the initiative formed part of a broader push to strengthen the international presence of Cypriot businesses and foster new commercial partnerships abroad.

As part of the Cypriot delegation’s programme, a “Cyprus Maritime Innovation Event” was held on 2 September, featuring presentations from Cypriot organisations and companies alongside a round-table discussion on innovation, sustainability and competitiveness in the shipping sector. Co-organised by the ministry and the Deputy Ministry of Shipping with support from the Cyprus Trade Centre in Berlin, the event highlighted the advantages of the Cyprus flag and the island’s potential as a maritime hub.

Cypriot companies also used the fair to hold business meetings with representatives of international shipping and technology firms, exploring potential partnerships and commercial opportunities.

The ministry said Cyprus’s presence at SMM Hamburg had helped showcase the depth and expertise of the country’s maritime ecosystem in innovation, technology and shipping services, while giving Cypriot businesses a platform for international exposure and new business contacts.
