The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus has thanked the Austrian government for its first financial contribution to the program, a €20,000 donation received on 12 June.
Officials said the funds will support efforts this year to identify and return the remains of missing persons, ending decades of uncertainty for affected families.
The CMP was created in 1981 under United Nations auspices through an agreement between the island’s Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, following calls in two UN General Assembly resolutions.
Its project on the exhumation, identification and return of remains became operational in 2006. The European Union remains its main financial contributor.
To date, 1,069 missing persons from both communities have been identified and returned to their families for burial.
The CMP relies on donor funding to carry out its bi‑communal work.
