Cyprus Inflation at 0.5% in January as Consumer Price Index Edges Lower

Cyprus recorded inflation of 0.5% in January, even as the Consumer Price Index slipped to 99.98 units, down 0.30 points from December, the Statistical Service has said.

Agricultural products posted the largest annual increase, rising 8.2%, while electricity and water fell 6.5% and petroleum products 6.1%. Compared with December, agricultural goods again showed the biggest movement, up 7.9%.

Among consumer categories, the sharpest annual declines were in clothing and footwear (–7.0%), while the biggest increases were in restaurants and accommodation (4.8%), education (3.7%) and recreation and culture (3.2%).

Clothing and footwear also recorded the steepest monthly drop (–12.1%), while food and non‑alcoholic beverages rose 3.5%.

Food and non‑alcoholic beverages, restaurants and accommodation, and recreation and culture made the largest positive contributions to the annual CPI change. The biggest negative contributions came from clothing and footwear and transport.

Petroleum products had the largest negative effect on annual inflation, while catering services had the largest positive effect. Fresh vegetables were the biggest monthly driver of the index, while clothing items had the largest downward impact.
