FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties held a bicommunal dialogue meeting at the Ledra Palace Hotel Wednesday, under the auspices of the Slovak Embassy.
The meeting, hosted by the Democratic Party (DP), focused on enhancing cooperation through a proposed Bicommunal Environment, Climate Change, and Emergency Response Committee.
Participants emphasized the urgency of addressing shared environmental challenges, particularly climate change and natural disasters, and recommended expanding the mandate of the existing Bicommunal Technical Committee on Environment.
Discussions also touched on bilateral cooperation projects, including solar energy initiatives agreed upon during a previous informal meeting in Geneva.
Representatives noted the humanitarian importance of joint efforts and expressed satisfaction with the appointment of a new United Nations personal envoy and recent confidence-building measures.
The parties urged leaders to implement agreed-upon confidence-building measures and expand areas of collaboration, prioritizing environmental and crisis management initiatives as key to any peaceful resolution on the island.
The next bicommunal meeting is scheduled for April 30, 2025, with the Socialist Party of Cyprus (SPC) hosting.
