Former residents of the village of Gypsou, now in Turkish occupied Cyprus,  are  mourning following the deaths of a local man killed in wildfire that swept through the mountainous Limassol district last week.

Dimitris Filippidis Pastou, 85, and his wife, Maro Avraam Filippidou, 77, were found burned inside their vehicle as they attempted to flee the fast-moving flames.

The couple had returned to Cyprus after years in England and had settled in Limassol.

Pastou was a native of Gypsou, in the Famagusta region, whilst his wife came from Morphou.

In a public statement posted on Facebook, the community expressed sorrow over the loss.

The village said it had paid “its own price” in the deadly fires and extended condolences to the victims’ family.

The blaze prompted widespread evacuations and left behind extensive damage across several mountain villages.
