Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides said he has not ruled out submitting a plan to resolve the island’s decades‑long division before the end of 2026.
In an interview with ALPHA television, Christodoulides said intense behind‑the‑scenes consultations are underway.
He noted that a recent meeting between U.N. Secretary‑General António Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara appeared to play a decisive role.
Christodoulides said Guterres has launched a new initiative following that meeting and briefed him on the effort during talks in Brussels.
The president added that the U.N. move could lead to developments requiring difficult decisions from all sides.
