Dozens of dead fish were discovered Monday in Athalassa Lake, prompting an emergency response from multiple government agencies, officials said.
Reports suggest that a sudden rise in water levels stirred up sediment from the lakebed, likely depriving fish of oxygen. The incident does not appear to be linked to disease or pollution.
About 80 fish — mostly carp weighing between one and three kilograms — have been recovered so far, with more being collected.
Authorities are taking water and fish samples for laboratory analysis, with results expected within a week.
Athalassa Lake has experienced smaller‑scale fish die‑offs in the past, typically linked to sudden changes in water temperature, oxygen depletion or fluctuations in water levels.
The lake, part of Athalassa National Forest Park, is a popular recreation area and home to various freshwater species, making any ecological disturbance a matter of public concern.
