Government employment in Cyprus rises slightly in April

FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – Cyprus’ government workforce grew by 237 employees in April 2025, a 0.4 percent increase compared to the same month in 2024, reaching a total of 55,490 workers, according to official data.

Employment in the Civil Service and Security Forces declined by 1.2 percent and 1.1 percent, respectively, while the Educational Service saw a 3.8 percent rise.

From January to April 2025, average government employment increased by 0.9 percent year-on-year.

In April, the Civil Service employed 11,960 permanent staff, 4,141 workers with indefinite contracts, 1,458 on definite contracts, and 5,798 hourly paid employees. Permanent staff made up 51.2 percent of the sector’s workforce.

The Educational Service had 12,461 permanent staff, 947 on indefinite contracts, 4,824 on definite contracts, and 141 hourly paid workers, with permanent employees accounting for 67.8 percent of the workforce.

Security Forces employed 8,430 permanent personnel, 4,304 with indefinite contracts, 267 with definite contracts, and 759 hourly paid workers. Permanent staff represented 61.3 percent of the sector’s workforce.
