Police in Istanbul detained 7,779 individuals in August as part of a citywide operation targeting suspects wanted for serious crimes, including murder, armed robbery, sexual assault, theft, fraud and illegal possession of firearms.
The arrests were carried out by the Istanbul Police Department’s Fugitive Persons Bureau between Aug. 1 and Aug. 31. Among those apprehended was Enver K.O., who had a finalized prison sentence of 59 years and one month.
Of the 2,578 convicted individuals taken into custody:
- 54 were sentenced to more than 20 years,
- 140 received between 10 and 20 years,
- 298 were sentenced to between 5 and 10 years,
- 2,086 had sentences under 5 years.
In addition, police captured 5,201 suspects with active warrants. All detainees were transferred to local police stations for processing.
Authorities say the operation reflects ongoing efforts to enforce outstanding court decisions and improve public safety across the city.
