Sovereign Base Areas Police firearms instructor, Andreas Agathocleous, has received praise for his professional and athletic achievements following a bronze medal at the European Triathlon Championship in Istanbul on August 31.
The 37-year-old Temporary Sergeant was selected to go to Turkey following his National Championship victory in Paphos in May.
Crossing the line in third, following a gruelling 2,400 metre swim, a 40-kilometre bike ride and a 10-kilometre run, was made more impressive as he balanced preparation with a demanding day job that sees him train Armed Response Vehicle Officers.
Speaking this week, he reflected on his remarkable rise to the top: “The pride I have for my achievements is unmeasurable, especially under the circumstances.
“I started this sport at 32, with no previous athletic background, I am a father of two young boys, and to be able to train and perform at this level, at this age, every single day is a struggle and that is what makes it special for me.
“To be able to see the excitement in their eyes when I race and giving them a good example to look up to, is for me, priceless.”
Georgiou Theofanis, the President of the Cyprus Triathlon Federation, was so impressed with Agathocleous’ achievements, he wrote to Commander British Forces Cyprus, Major GeneralTom Bewick.
The letter said: “Through his dedication and hard work, he has brought honour both to his country and to the service in which he serves.
“He consistently demonstrates an exemplary athletic ethos, embodying the true spirit of sport and we firmly believe that he will continue to contribute to his country with the same ability and commitment in the years ahead.
“We are fully aware of the demanding nature of police service and of the challenges of balancing such a role with family life. The dedication and discipline to excel simultaneously in three demanding sports under these circumstances is truly extraordinary.”
SBA Police Superintendent, Mustafa Kemal, also paid tribute to him as a police officer, an athlete and a role model.
He said: “His athletic accomplishments reflect the same qualities he brings to policing; focus, determination and a commitment to continuous improvement.
“By representing the SBA Police within the national competitions he participates, Andreas serves as an inspiring role model for colleagues, community members and young people alike.”
