Monaco reiterated its commitment to preserving marine ecosystems during a UN General Assembly debate on oceans and the law of the sea.
Speaking Dec. 8, Ambassador Isabelle Picco, Monaco’s permanent representative, stressed the importance the principality places on safeguarding biodiversity.
She highlighted the role of science and outlined initiatives taken in 2025 to address environmental challenges.
Among them were the Blue Economy and Finance Forum held in June, the launch of the Space4Ocean Alliance, Monaco’s two‑year presidency of the Pelagos Agreement to protect Mediterranean marine mammals, and new climate pledges under the Paris Agreement.
The Assembly also discussed sustainable fisheries, the treaty on biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ), and preparations for the next UN Ocean Conference (UNOC4).
