BRUSSELS — NATO is increasing its readiness and surveillance in the Baltic Sea region following a series of unauthorized drone activities over Danish airports and military installations.
The measures include intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms, as well as at least one air-defense frigate, according to alliance officials.
Danish authorities have pointed to Russia as a possible source of what they described as “hybrid attacks designed to instill fear.” Moscow has dismissed the accusations as “baseless.”
Amid the drone-related tensions, Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet revealed that a Russian warship from the Baltic Fleet, based in Kaliningrad, was recently spotted near Danish territorial waters with its tracking systems turned off.
