The Pentagon is preparing to deploy National Guard troops to Chicago as early as next month, according to sources cited by The Washington Post.
The plans, under development for several weeks, include multiple options.
One proposal involves mobilizing several thousand guardsmen in September to address what the Trump administration describes as rising crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration.
President Donald Trump has already deployed nearly 2,000 National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., and said Friday that Chicago and New York may be next.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has rejected the idea, stating there is no emergency that warrants federal intervention.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has also voiced concern, warning that such a move could inflame tensions between residents and law enforcement.
The Pentagon has not confirmed any final decision.
