Police kept a patrol outside Paphos Town Hall overnight following the government’s decision to suspend Mayor Phedon Phedonos pending the outcome of criminal investigations, officials said Thursday.
Phedonos went to the building late Wednesday to collect personal belongings, with officers maintaining a discreet presence outside, authorities said.
Deputy Mayor Angelos Onisiforou has assumed the duties of acting mayor. He said the municipality continues to operate normally and that serving residents remains its top priority.
Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou, who returned from abroad late Wednesday, is expected to approve the formal notice placing Phedonos on suspension for publication in the Official Gazette.
Police spokesman Byron Byronos said investigators have taken several statements, formed an inquiry team and are assessing the evidence to determine the next steps in the probe.
