A 70‑year‑old road worker was killed Thursday night on the Nicosia–Limassol highway after he was struck by a passing vehicle while carrying out maintenance work near Moni.
Police identified the victim as Savvas Ioannou, of Paphos. Authorities said he was hit shortly after 7 p.m. as he was placing traffic cones to close the fast lane.
According to Limassol traffic chief Marios Charalambous, a 37‑year‑old driver crashed into a lighted mobile arrow sign positioned in the right lane and simultaneously struck Ioannou. The circumstances of the collision are under investigation.
Police are taking statements, including from the victim’s colleagues who were at the scene.
The 37‑year‑old driver sustained minor injuries. He underwent alcohol and drug tests, both of which came back negative.
