The Council of British Cypriots has expressed “deep concern” over the impact of the United Kingdom’s recently updated travel advice for Cyprus, warning that the guidance is already leading to flight and holiday cancellations.

In a letter to Europe Minister Stephen Doughty, the council said the heightened warnings — issued during a period of regional instability linked to the Middle East conflict — risk causing significant damage to Cyprus’ tourism sector ahead of the Easter travel period. The island, it noted, has prepared extensively to welcome millions of visitors.

The letter also highlights Cyprus’ long‑standing role in regional stability, including more than two decades of humanitarian support and assistance in evacuating foreign nationals from crisis zones. It further points to Cyprus’ current presidency of the EU Council.

While acknowledging the UK government’s responsibility to safeguard its citizens abroad, the council urged officials to reassess the travel advice so that it reflects a “more balanced and proportionate” assessment of the situation. The current wording, it warned, could undermine Cyprus’ reputation as a safe and attractive destination.

“Vigilance is essential, but the risk of terrorist activity is a global phenomenon and not confined to the region,” the letter states.
