FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE – The United Nations and the Cypriot government aim to create the right conditions by June to foster a positive climate that will allow substantial discussions at a multilateral conference in July, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said.
Speaking on the television program Apo Mera se Mera, Letymbiotis expressed confidence that the combination of sound arguments presented by the president and the initiatives taken over the past two years—along with the European Union’s involvement—will make the conference a launching point for meaningful negotiations.
Letymbiotis added that Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership have strayed from the framework supported by the international community. The expectation now, he said, is for alignment and a return to the right track to resume substantive talks and restart negotiations.
“We believe that with the reopening of negotiations, we will be very close to a resolution of the Cyprus issue,” Letymbiotis said, emphasizing that an agreement would benefit all Cypriots, Turkey, the European Union, the region, and international partners.
